If you’ve ever found yourself choosing sleep over sex, you’re far from alone. A survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation discovered that 1 out of every 4 couples claimed to be too tired for intimacy with their partner on a regular basis.
That survey was done back in 2010, and we can only assume that the issue has escalated since then due to the introduction of more and more mobile devices causing even more distraction in the bedroom.
Sleep experts and health professionals have since discovered that while lack of sleep can be a leading cause of less sex, the opposite is also true. The more sleep that you get, and the better quality of that sleep, the better chance you have at a happy sex life.
So what is it exactly about better sleep that leads to better sex? Research has shown that the following benefits of getting a good night’s sleep are also linked to a closer relationship with your partner when it comes to the quality of your sex life.
Hormonal Balance and Increased Desire
It turns out that sleep has a big effect on our hormones. When getting more sleep, both men and women experience an increase in the hormones that are directly related to a healthy sex life: estrogen and testosterone.
For men, undiagnosed sleep apnea can lead to a significant drop in their libido, as well as a lowered sperm count. These problems can be treated with testosterone shots and supplements, but doctors have found that when a patient’s sleep deprivation is addressed and resolved, the problems take care of themselves – no medication needed.
And in women, health professionals have found that getting more sleep has immediately improved and increased her level of desire.
Reduced Anxiety and Fewer Arguments
Anyone that has ever suffered through sleep deprivation knows how rough it can be, and not getting enough sleep has been directly linked to increased anxiety in both men and women.
Lack of sleep can also lead to emotional disturbances and mood swings, both of which are sure ways to get into an argument with your partner (or anyone else who happens to have the misfortune of being around the sleep deprived).
Getting more sleep has been shown to have an immediate positive effect on the sex lives of couples, simply by relieving stress and improving mood. The rest takes care of itself.
Fewer Sleep Disturbances
Sleep deprivation has also been shown to cause an increase of disturbed sleep amongst couples, due to snoring, tossing and turning, and Periodic Leg Movement Disorder (PLMD). All of these issues can be resolved by getting a better night’s sleep, along with the addition of a
supportive mattress focused on decreasing partner disturbances.
This means no more fleeing to the couch for one partner. After all, having a better sex life has to start with being able to stand being in the same bed together!
Less Worry, Deeper Connections
According to sleep experts, most American adults have a huge “sleep debt.” They are constantly trying to play catch-up when it comes to sleep, and most are losing miserably.
When you are getting more sleep overall and not just on the weekends, you no longer have to worry about rushing to bed in an effort to try and salvage some sleep.
With
better sleep, you’ll be debt free, refreshed, and all about spending some quality time with your partner. And that means that your performance (and your sex life) will improve.
