What Independent Testing Says About Lull & Back Pain
NapLab independently evaluated the Lull Luxe Hybrid — Lull did not commission the test. Their reviewers measured how well each mattress distributes weight to reduce pressure at pain-prone contact points: hips, lower back, and shoulders. The Luxe Hybrid scored 9.0/10 for pressure relief, above the 8.7 mattress category average across 370+ beds tested.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most from sleepers dealing with back pain.
What is the best mattress for lower back pain?
Most spine specialists recommend a medium-firm mattress (5.5–6.5 on a 10-point scale) for lower back pain. This range supports lumbar alignment without creating pressure points at the hips or shoulders. Independent testing by NapLab scored the Lull Luxe Hybrid 9.0/10 for pressure relief, above the 8.7 mattress category average across 370+ beds tested.
Does a new mattress help with back pain?
Research suggests yes — a 2011 study in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that participants who replaced a mattress older than 5 years reported 57% less back pain. The key factors are firmness, pressure relief, and consistent support through the night. Most quality mattresses come with a sleep trial (Lull offers 365 nights) to let you confirm it’s working.
What firmness is best for back pain?
Most research points to medium-firm (around 5–6 on a 10-point scale) as the sweet spot for back pain. A 2021 systematic review of 39 studies confirmed medium-firm consistently outperforms softer or firmer alternatives for spinal alignment and sleep quality. Side sleepers often prefer medium (4–5); back and stomach sleepers typically do better with medium-firm to firm. The Lull Original sits squarely in the medium-firm range; the Original Premium sits at medium for deeper pressure relief.
Is memory foam good for back pain?
Yes. Modern memory foam — particularly open-cell or gel-infused construction — is effective for back pain because it contours to the body, distributes pressure evenly, and reduces stress at key contact points. A 2015 systematic review in Sleep Health found pressure-reducing mattress designs consistently improved sleep quality and reduced back pain across controlled trials.
Is memory foam or hybrid better for back pain?
Both can work well — the right choice depends on your sleep style. All-foam (like the Original Lull) excels at pressure relief and motion isolation — ideal for side sleepers and lighter individuals. Hybrid (like the Luxe Hybrid) adds bounce, edge support, and superior airflow via pocket coils — better for back sleepers, heavier sleepers, or couples who need responsiveness. The Luxe Hybrid scored 9.0/10 for pressure relief in independent NapLab testing.
Can a mattress make back pain worse?
Yes. Too soft, and the spine sags out of neutral alignment. Too firm, and the mattress creates pressure points and prevents the natural spinal curves from being supported. Both worsen back pain over time, particularly in the lower back and hips. The right firmness for your body weight and sleep position matters as much as the materials themselves.
How long before I know if a new mattress is helping my back?
Most sleep researchers recommend at least 30 nights before drawing conclusions — your body needs time to adapt from one sleep surface to another. For chronic back pain, 60–90 nights is a more realistic minimum. This is a practical reason why trial length actually matters when choosing a mattress. Lull offers 365 nights specifically because back pain response takes time to evaluate properly.
Does sleep position affect back pain?
Significantly. According to the Cleveland Clinic, side sleeping with a pillow between the knees is typically the best position for back pain. Back sleeping with a pillow under the knees also works well. Stomach sleeping is generally the most stressful position for the spine — it creates hyperextension of the lower back — and is usually discouraged for anyone with chronic back pain.
Is an expensive mattress better for back pain?
Not necessarily. Price reflects materials, branding, and retail margin — not back pain outcomes. A well-constructed medium-firm foam mattress at $400 can outperform a $3,000 luxury hybrid for most back pain sufferers. The factors that actually matter — firmness, pressure relief, and spinal support — are not exclusive to high-end mattresses. Saatva’s back pain mattress (Saatva Rx) starts at $2,801. The Lull Original starts at $339.
